Student Education Event

******NEWS RELEASE******

The Franklin Police Department, Heard County Sheriff’s Office, and Heard County Fire and Emergency Services will be hosting a student education program for the students at Heard County High School on Thursday, April 11th. The event will be held in the parking lot of the Heard County High School from 8:30am – 2:30pm.

A similar program was originally started in 2011 and funded by the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety, but it’s funding was eliminated in 2013. Upon learning of the elimination of this program, Principle Russell Sowell, Chief Kevin Hannah, Sheriff Ross Henry, and Chief Scott Blue met to discuss the continuance of the education program. It was decided that student involvement was necessary to identify topics and the education program was redesigned to fit these concerns.

The redesigned program will consist of various stations which discuss statutory and date rape, driving under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol, texting and driving, speeding, safety restraints, ATV safety, and other important topics that were identified. The program will also have a station that allows students to experience the effects of texting and driving, while in a controlled environment.

Guest from Air Life, Carroll County Sheriff’s Office, Heard County District Attorney’s Office, and Carroll County Rape Crisis Center will also be present to assist in delivering these very important topics.
